Comharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne

Background

Comharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne Teo. was founded in 1967 to develop and improve the social, economic and cultural life of the people of Corca Dhuibhne, the largest Gaeltacht community in Munster. Since 1967 the Comharchumann has played a key role in the development of the peninsula’s economy, acting on behalf of its shareholders and for the benefit of the people of Corca Dhuibhne.

Since its inception, the Comharchumann has endeavoured to build on the natural resources in the area and to avail of as many income and employment opportunities as possible. In the 1960s, there was a particular focus on the agriculture and fishing industries and there was a policy of focusing on the needs of local farmers. But the scope of the organisation has expanded over the years, particularly the 1970s and 1980s. Today, the education and training sector is the main market for Comharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne.

This reflects the fundamental change in the economy of the peninsula and indeed the change in most Gaeltacht areas along the western coastline. It also shows that the Comharchumann was able to deal effectively with these changes and to adapt the development strategy of the Comharchumann to the opportunities and needs of development as the social and economic world was changing. Comharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne is based in Áras Bhréanainn in Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. The work carried out by the Comharchumann is undertaken it’s by five subsidiary companies: Coláistí Chorca Dhuibhne, Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, Tobar Dhuibhne, SOLAS Scheme, and Skillnet Ltd.
